Robin Street-Morris, originally from St. Joseph, Michigan, is a working artist living in St. Louis. She graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design in 2000 with a BFA in drawing, painting and photography. Robin's personal and commissioned works can be found in private collections worldwide and images of her art have been used for diverse purposes by various organizations, including the Government of Canada, the National Institutes of Health, and the Michigan Nature Association. Statement: Creating art was my primary interest throughout childhood and it has since become my profession. Nearly all of my work is nature-inspired. Sometimes I am compelled to show recognizable forms, other times I focus only on a pattern, color combination or phenomenon that lends itself well to either organic or geometric abstraction. I am also inspired by the fairy tales and myths woven by various cultures to explain nature’s mysteries. My goal is to produce works that will hold one’s attention—works that can be contemplated repeatedly and that invite viewers to meditate on something as simple as a bit of luminous color or a graceful line. I prefer to work small because doing so is conducive to my aim of creating an intimate viewing experience. While I have worked in a wide range of
media, I
always come back to watercolor, pastel and colored pencil, often
combining
two or all three of the latter in order to create a layered look that
is
at once saturated and translucent. In the
case of my nature spirit series, the carving and lifting of paper
results in
lines that take on watercolor pigments heavily and shift once powdered
pastel
has been applied and blended, resulting in works evocative of something
one might hope to catch a glimpse of.
